MicroPower Signs Strategic Partnership with Enerkit

May 2013 Press Release

MicroPower Global is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with Enerkit, a leading clean energy and clean cooking company, to develop and commercialise a thermoelectric-enabled cooking stove platform targeting the global clean cooking market.

Under the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding, MicroPower and Enerkit will collaborate on the design and commercialisation of a biomass cooking stove integrated with MicroPower's thermoelectric generator technology. The partnership targets the approximately 2.4 billion people globally who rely on biomass cooking without access to modern electricity and appliances.

"The global clean cooking challenge is massive and multifaceted," said a MicroPower spokesperson. "Biomass cooking is the primary energy source for nearly a third of the world's population. Those cooking processes waste enormous amounts of thermal energy. Our partnership with Enerkit allows us to add electricity generation capability to their cooking stove platform – transforming waste heat into useful power for lighting, charging, and small appliances."

The integrated thermoelectric cooking stove addresses multiple humanitarian needs simultaneously. Biomass cooking produces significant indoor air pollution, affecting respiratory health particularly for women and children. Enerkit's efficient stove designs reduce smoke and improve combustion. Adding MicroPower's thermoelectric technology creates additional value: the stove now generates electricity that can power LED lighting for reading and homework, charge mobile phones for communication and emergency services, and power small appliances.

"This is an elegant value proposition," explained company leadership. "We're not asking users to adopt new technology or new fuel sources. We're working with an existing cooking practice – biomass cooking – and extracting additional value from the waste heat that's already being generated. The thermoelectric stove becomes a multi-function energy device: cooking, heating, lighting, and power generation, all from one appliance."

The global clean cooking market represents a substantial opportunity. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals specifically target universal access to modern energy. Clean cooking is foundational to health, education, and economic development in resource-limited communities. However, adoption barriers include cost, reliability, and functionality. A stove that combines cooking, heating, and electricity generation addresses multiple needs with a single investment.

"Enerkit brings proven expertise in clean cooking stove design, supply chain, and market access," noted MicroPower representatives. "We bring thermoelectric technology that converts the stove's waste heat into electricity. Together, we create a product that's more valuable and more functional than either company could develop independently."

The partnership aligns with MicroPower's broader strategy to commercialise thermoelectric technology across multiple application domains. The company is simultaneously pursuing defence applications (soldier-portable power), industrial applications (waste heat recovery from engines and generators), and humanitarian applications (clean cooking and off-grid power). The Enerkit partnership positions MicroPower as a supplier of thermoelectric platforms for the humanitarian sector.

"This partnership validates a fundamental insight: waste heat is everywhere, and thermoelectric technology can capture it," said company leadership. "Whether the application is a soldier's cooking stove, an industrial generator, or a clean cooking stove in a developing country, the physics and the value proposition are the same. We're capturing energy that would otherwise be wasted and converting it into electricity. This partnership is the first commercial embodiment of that vision in the clean cooking sector."

About MicroPower: MicroPower Global develops advanced thermoelectric generators and cooling systems that convert industrial waste heat into clean electricity. With an international patent portfolio and third-party testing and validation across NREL, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, NIST, Bechtel-Bettis, and Texas State, MicroPower's technology operates at 3–5× the efficiency of any commercial alternative.

About Enerkit: Enerkit is a global leader in clean energy and clean cooking solutions, developing and deploying efficient biomass stoves and integrated energy systems for communities without reliable electricity access.
